Published in Springer January 2024, this sports medicine study compares “The Effectiveness of Dance Interventions on Psychological and Cognitive Health Outcomes Compared with Other Forms of Physical Activity” and finds dance to be ‘almost five times as effective as SSRIs in lifting mood among depressed people’.
I wonder what they would find if drumming were included in the study. We have long observed that both drumming and dancing lift the spirits – a perfect mix of endorphin release and human connection. Imagine if doctors were prescribing drum and dance class instead of (or in conjunction with) anti-depressants medication.
