Lucky Lartey came to Melbourne (from Sydney) to run two workshops as a one-off event. He taught an hour of high-energy African dance followed by a class in ‘gumboot dance’. This style originates from slaves in South Africa and involves creating percussive sounds by ‘playing’ the boots as drums, clapping and stamping. We all agreed that we’d all had a good brain work-out!
Lucky is a talented artist who likes to create his own choreographies using traditional African movement styles. He puts a lot of thought into his classes which made it a positive experience for all of us.
Thanks to the drummers who came along to support the event.
