Senegalese artist Ibou Ngom was in Melbourne for only two weeks. We were very lucky we were able to learn some things from him at these workshops! During drum class we learnt Sounou Vitesse which was quite a challenge. The Sabar dance class was, for most of the participants, the first time they had ever experienced Sabar. Timing was difficult to grasp but by the end there was a wild energy in the room and we all left on a great high. Ibou is a wonderful, patient teacher with a great sense of humour.
Thanks to the drummers who played for dance class – Simon Lewis, Ousmane Sonko and Karamba Sissko.
